Byblos, also known as Jubayl or Jebeil, is believed to be first occupied between 8800 and 7000 BC and continuously inhabited since 5000 BC. Byblos is listed as a candidate for the world’s oldest city. Numerous civilisations have come and gone, including the ancient Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, Hellenistic and Roman, Fatimid, Genoese, Mamluk and Ottoman. Byblos is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
