Kyoto is one of the oldest municipalities in Japan, and in AD 794, it was chosen as the new seat of Japan’s Imperial Court. Kyoto remained the capital of Japan until 1889 when Tokyo replaced it. Kyoto was spared from destruction during World War II, and most of its cultural heritage has been preserved. Currently home to 3.8 million residents, Kyoto remains the cultural capital of Japan and a significant tourist destination.
