Hall of Giants
The series "HALL OF GIANTS" shows a selection of large-format portraits of some of the oldest and largest elephant bulls in East Africa, as well as some young elephants that have the potential to grow into Big Tuskers.
His portraits give us intimate insights into creation's beauty and its transience. Joachim's work is both a homage and a reminder—a visually breathtaking work characterised by great empathy to sharpen our clouded view of the one infinitely complex and vulnerable nature and recognise which treasures we can irretrievably lose. On the one hand, the timelessly beautiful photographs are testimonies of a distant past and, on the other, iconic reminders of a near future in which we can only admire these majestic creatures in pictures or in a few zoos.
Joachim's impressive close-ups are extremely rare in this genre of photography. His portraits of the Big Tuskers are the only ones that exist in this form. All photographs were taken from a very short distance with medium-format cameras without remote control devices or long telephoto lenses.
